Feeling Un-beautiful

We do not craft our own reality,
but usually, I feel we do.
If I feel one way,
That way it must be.
If I feel another,
The first is obsolete.
And all the while, the way it is
Is written in invisible ink
On the wall.

We do not craft our own reality,
but in the mind, I think we do.
If my eyes see one thing,
That alone will register in my brain.
If they see another,
The first one fades away.
And all the while, the way it is
Is written in invisible ink
On the wall.

We do not craft our own reality,
but in a way, I wish we did.
If I wanted one thing,
That I could call to being.
If I wanted another,
The first would cease to be.
And all the while, there would not be
Invisible ink on the wall
For me to ignore.

  1. Hey Jaimie,

I love this poem, I really do. I don't know about angsty. The title did remind me of "Unpretty", where I had two seconds of TLC going through my head. (It's R&B, just in case you have reached that area in your pop culture studies). I'm not sure about the invisible ink, for some reason in the last stanza, it seems disjointed. Yes, it's intentional, emphasizing the difference. I like it, but the first time I didn't. Anyway beautiful.

  2. I'm so glad you like it! And I don't know "Unpretty..." I had to stop my education in pop culture for other important things, like college credit. When you say you're unsure about the invisible ink, do you mean the concept, or what you already mentioned about it seeming disjointed? I was actually contemplating whether or not to even keep the third stanza, but I felt like it was important to wrap up what I was saying. It did ruin the flow and the pleasant way the words sounded together. I'd go back and change it if I were trying to send it in somewhere.
